It's prompting state health officials to once again recommend residents wear face masks.

The new data comes as the weather improves and residents spend more time outdoors.

"We need to try working a little harder than we had been to prevent transmission, and the most, clearest and most tangible example of that is we encourage people to wear masks in indoor settings when they are gathering," Dr. Ryan Westergaard said Monday.

Wisconsin's top state health official issued strong recommendations.

The seven highest counties for community transmission are Kenosha, La Crosse, Barron, Monroe, Rusk, Vernon and Racine.

Westergaard proposed residents in all of those counties wear face masks while in indoor public spaces.

In Racine, residents reacted Tuesday to the possibility of bringing a mask mandate back.

"It's a little scary and overwhelming, to say the least," Craig Witek said.

"With it being so nice out and we're finally been to normal people just want to keep it that way," Crystal Meekma said.

"I think it's always gonna be with us. We're gonna have to live with it and I think to live with it we're gonna have to have mask mandates come in and out," Anita Carr said.

Right now there is no mask mandate in place in Racine County.

It's only a strong recommendation from health officials.

More than 30 Wisconsin counties are considered to be in the moderate COVID-19 community transmission category.

That includes Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties.
