From isolated frost to the hottest temperatures of the year so far, big changes are next

A Frost ADVISORY is in effect for areas east of Lake Ontario between 2:00 AM Wednesday and 8:00 AM Wednesday. This includes Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and northern Oneida counties.

A frost advisory means that cold temperatures will reach the dew (frost) point and cause frost across parts or all of the counties listed above. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

In this particular case, the highest risk for frost will be for inland sections of the counties listed above and the sheltered valley locations.

Besides the counties listed above, there is a chance that a few isolated central New York coldest countryside locations of the immediate central New York area to see widely isolated frost.

The lowest risk for frost will be right near the lakeshores of Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake and the Finger Lakes. Downtown Syracuse is not likely to get frost.

After a couple of transition days Wednesday and Thursday, get set for potentially the warmest to hottest temperatures of 2021 so far!

Syracuse has had six 80 degree days this year so far including 5 consecutive days between this past Wednesday May 11th through Sunday May 15th.

The warmest Syracuse has reached this year so far was 85 degrees on May 12th, so far.

It appears very likely that temperatures should be higher either one or both days for Friday and Saturday May 20th & 21st.

In addition, it looks likely that our first 90 degree day may occur as well!

Here are the earliest, latest & average first date of 90 degrees for Syracuse:
-- Earliest first 90 degree day on record: April 16th, 2012.
-- Latest first 90 degree day on record: August 31st, 1958.
-- Average first 90 degree day: June 17th.

Other interesting 90 degree statistics for Syracuse:
--The average number of 90 degree days per year is 8.
--The record number of 90 degree days in any year is 28 days in 1955.
--Last year (2021) had 18 days of 90 degrees or higher (11th most on record).
