WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — A grand jury indicted a man and woman from West Palm Beach with attempted murder for trying to set a baby on fire in New York.

The Seneca County Sheriff's Office said 28-year-old Jamie Avery and 25-year-old Lisbeth Collado face charges of attempted aggravated murder, second-degree attempted murder, second-degree arson, second-degree attempted arson, and first-degree attempted assault.

The charges stem from an incident on May 3 at the Love's Travel Plaza near Waterloo.

Deputies responded to a report of several fires at the plaza. They said Avery and Collado tried to light their 1-year-old child on fire.

Authorities found the child covered in a flammable liquid. They found a second child, a 4-year-old, with head injuries, abandoned in a tractor-trailer.

Both children are out of the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.

The sheriff's office said the suspects share an address.

According to a neighbor, the two had been living there with their two small children.

I’ve seen her walk by with kids in the stroller," Leroy Goodrich told WPEC News. "Just sick. How can somebody do somebody like that? A little baby. An innocent child."

Authorities have yet to say what led up to the attempted murder and abuse.
