For the first time in three years, people will physically get a chance to sample bites from downtown Long Beach eateries during a popular business promotion event.

The Taste of Downtown will return in person next week.

The Downtown Long Beach Alliance, which sponsors of the popular event, announced the return on Monday, May 16. The first Taste of Downtown will be in the East Village from 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, May 25-26, with two more planned for later this summer.

The DLBA canceled in-person taste events the last two summers because of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, they sponsored Zoom events featuring restaurants, bars and businesses once a month.

During the free-to-attend food festival, people can try sample-sized portions of dishes from the area for a varying number of tasting tickets, which cost $1 each. They can be purchased online and at the event.

There also will be live music on stage in the East Village during the event.

Next week’s taste is sponsored by The Auld Dubliner, George’s Greek Café, Jersey Mike’s, Rosemallows Fonda Tobala and Padre. As of Monday, 17 restaurants had signed up to participate.

Michael Berman, DLBA communications director, said Taste of Downtown events are planned for June 29 and 30 between Pine Avenue and the Promenade, and on Aug. 24 and 25 on the waterfront.
