CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Downtown Cleveland construction is nothing new, especially for those who regularly step by the Euclid Grand apartments at 1101 Euclid Ave. But today, that scene changed, when a small garden bloomed with fresh flowers on Tuesday morning... in the center of the sidewalk.
An unknown gardener installed the marigolds, along with a tiny white picket fence, in a hole which is located, not-so-conveniently, in the center of the heavily used sidewalk on Euclid Ave. As of last night, the hole was still there, said downtown Cleveland resident Pete Marek.
And the hole has been there a while. According to Marek, who lives in the nearby Halle building, the hole has been there for about six months.
Marek posted a before and after photo of the space on Twitter, stating “Now think of the Victory Garden we could plant here!!!”
Marek said he learned about the garden’s appearance when Michael Collier shared news of it on Twitter. Collier posted a photo of the garden on Tuesday morning, responding to a thread about the sidewalk construction work and its safety hazards.
In the thread, Collier said that Euclid Grand may have been behind the garden. “I know they’ve been waiting on matching bricks since last summer,” Collier said in the tweet. “But I HOPE it was some guerilla activism.”
Collier said in a Twitter message that he thinks the garden popped up overnight.
“The missing bricks have recently been a topic of conversation on Twitter again, so my guess is that building ownership decided to use this as a temporary fix,” Collier said. (Cleveland.com has reached out to Euclid Grand for comment.)
If you want to get a glimpse of the garden, you might want to get downtown soon, while it’s still there.
