Man charged for downtown Orlando shooting appears in court
Three people are believed to be responsible for a string of violence in downtown Orlando yesterday.
The man charged with shooting another man in downtown Orlando yesterday was in court for the first time today.
Michael Thomas stood before a judge on Tuesday and was charged with petit theft, burglary and criminal mischief and attempted second-degree murder.
Orlando police say Thomas shot a 24-year-old man multiple times around 4:30 a.m. Monday morning near the intersection of East Church Street and Liberty Avenue, the same block that houses the Orange County Administration Building.
Police say the shooting was caught on a nearby surveillance camera, where three suspects could be seen approaching the victim before running away as the victim fell to the ground.
The victim was taken to the hospital where police say he had surgery and is now recovering.
Officers were able to track the suspects on several other nearby cameras to the 200 block of South Osceola Avenue.
There, a witness told officers the three tried to steal a bike from her garage.
Then, around 7:30 a.m., police say they got another call.
This time, it was from someone reporting a group of people acting suspiciously on top of a parking garage back on Church Street.
Police say the suspicious people matched the description of the shooting suspects and when officers arrived, they arrested Thomas along with two others, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy.
During his initial appearance, a judge set Thomas's bond at $110,400.
"No contact with the victim and no contact with co-defendants. You're not to possess any weapons or firearms," the judge said in court.
The two teenagers arrested along with Thomas have both been charged with petit theft, burglary and accessory after the fact.
We are not naming them because they are minors.
