Lightning Strike Causes Nassau House Fire

Officials say 45 firefighters responded to fight the blaze, which displaced a family of three. There were no serious injuries.

ELMONT, NY — A fire in Elmont Monday afternoon displaced a family of three, but did not cause any serious injuries.

According to police, the fire began at a home on Circle Drive West around 4:15 p.m. Police officers arrived at the scene and were met by three people, ages 65, 61 and 22, who said the fire was at their home. They all managed to make it out of the house safely.

The Elmont Fire Department led the response, assisted by the Floral Park, Valley Stream and South Floral Park fire departments. It took 45 firefighters to get the blaze under control.

The home suffered moderate damage from the fire. One firefighter had blurred vision and was treated at the scene for a piece of debris in his eye.

An investigation determined the fire was not suspicious, and was possibly related to a nearby lightning strike, though the house itself was not hit by lighting.
