Knowing how Illinois ranks poorly on so many lists, it's weird to see us ranked in the top ten of nearly anything. Being recognized for a top ten ranking would be great in many other cases, but getting the attention for high gas prices pretty much sucks.

The whole country is being grabbed by the wallet and shaken down, but Illinois and 9 states appear to be shaking harder than the other states.

On Monday Morning Of This Week The National Average For A Gallon Of Unleaded Gasoline Was $4.48

You've got the extremes on each end according to AAA Chicago, with California posting the highest price for gas with an average of $5.98, and Kansas coming in the lowest at $3.98 per gallon. Kansas' price-point makes them one of three states in the U.S. with an average price below $4.00 (Kansas, Oklahoma, and Georgia).

The Illinois price for a gallon of unleaded regular as of this morning is $4.84.

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
