76 dogs killed in Avoca, Arkansas house fire
When Avoca firefighters arrived at a Saturday morning house fire, they found much more than smoke.
"Heavy smoke showing and also the homeowners were trying to get dogs out of the house," said Avoca Fire Department Assistant Chief, Brian Ervin.
According to Lt. Shannon Jenkins with the Benton County Fire Department, there were 149 dogs in all.
"We also had a team of EMTs and paramedics from Rogers and they were helping with giving oxygen to the dogs," said Ervin. "We do have respirators for dogs because the dogs did have smoke inhalation themselves."
The Rogers Sheriff's Department said 73 dogs survived. They are now at the Rogers Humane Society.
"We just try the best that we can with all that we have for the dogs," Ervin said.
The family of six was unharmed by the fire. But how it started and why they had 149 dogs in their home is under investigation. Lt. Jenkins said they will forward the information gathered to the county prosecutor's office. As for those who tried to save the lives of man’s best friend, it was a troubling experience.
"It's hard, even for us," said Ervin. "It's just like your own family members - sometimes it's dogs. That is your family is the dogs."
