NEW YORK CITY — An 11-year-old girl died Monday after being struck by a stray bullet fired in a scooter chase along a Bronx street, police said.

The bullet was intended for an as-yet-unidentified man seen running down Fox Street away from two people riding a scooter about 4:50 p.m., authorities said.

The scooter's passenger shot at the man, said Philip Rivera, the NYPD's assistant chief in command of Patrol Borough Bronx.

“One round traveled down Fox Street and struck the 11-year-old,” he said.

The girl was struck in the stomach as she stood in front of 993 Fox St., near Westchester Avenue, Rivera said. Medics rushed her to Lincoln Hospital, where she remained in critical condition for hours before dying, authorities said.

Police are looking for the people on the scooter, as well as their intended target, Rivera said.

The unidentified man was running on Fox Street from Westchester Avenue toward 165th Street, with the two people on the scooter in pursuit, Rivera said.

When he tried to run inside 1015 Fox St., the scooter rushed past, Rivera said. The man then doubled back, he said.

Surveillance footage released by the NYPD shows what happened next: the scooter passenger turns around and fires his gun at the man running away.

One bullet missed the man, but ended up hitting the girl in the stomach, Rivera said.
