Dog found tied to fire hydrant with toys, note from owner gets adopted

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WKRC) - A tragic tale out of Wisconsin has reached a happy ending!

In early May, strangers were surprised to find a dog tied to a fire hydrant with a backpack full of toys and a note from the owner, asking someone to take in the beloved pet.

The nearly six-year-old pup, named "Baby Girl", was brought to the Wisconsin Humane Society.

After a photo of Baby Girl tied to the hydrant went viral, the owner eventually came forward to tell her story.

It turned out, her owner was going through homelessness and chemotherapy, and was no longer able to care for her best friend.

Unfortunately, she couldn't find a shelter that would accept her in time.

"I called, oh God seven, places," she said. "I begged the animal shelter to please take her in. They gave me a date. 'You can bring her in on the 12th.'"

But waiting until then wouldn't work, so she did what she thought was best for Baby Girl.

"It was the worst," she said. "It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life."

After she was brought to the shelter, the Wisconsin Humane Society made a compassionate post on Facebook, openly addressing the owner.

"First and foremost, we are so sorry you had to part with your best friend. It’s evident just how much you loved her and we can see you did your best while struggling with your own medical complications and challenges of life," the post reads.

The shelter shared that the dog would be up for adoption soon, following treatment for some "potentially costly medical needs."

On May 12, the team shared in another Facebook post that Baby Girl had found a new forever home.

"Baby Girl was made available for adoption today and had a few folks eagerly waiting to meet her right when we opened," the post reads. "She has officially found a new home! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

The shelter also stated that Baby Girl's previous owner has been in touch, and that she "expressed her gratitude and happiness knowing Baby Girl would be finding her next loving home."
