Baton Rouge, La (BRPROUD)- Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) is receiving a safety grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the amount of $657,388.
The LHSC grants is used to compensate BRPD officers in overtime pay, surprised sobriety checkpoints, vehicle occupation safety checks;
- Impaired driving checks
- Underage drinking
- Speeding
- Railroad enforcement
- Sobriety check points.
“We understand the holidays and we also like to enjoy holidays and parties, but we want you to be safe! Plus, what you’re going to pay for a cab ride or a ride share is the fraction of a cost of a DWI offense,” said BRPD Chief of Police Murphy J. Paul, Jr.
Heavy enforcement is expected ahead of the holidays. BRPD officers is expected to work over 17,000 hours throughout the year to keep dangerous drivers off the streets, the press release states.
Enforcement operations originally started on Oct. 1, 2021 and will continue through Sept. 30, 2022 to keep the city safe.
