HIGH SCHOOL

Camille Lindsay, Long Beach Poly Cross Country

Lindsay was a Top 10 finisher at the 2021 CIF-SS Cross Country Championships over the weekend, finishing with a time of 18:11, the fastest time ever for a Poly girls’ runner at Mt. SAC. The standout junior’s 10th place finish was good enough to qualify for her first CIF State meet, which will be held next Saturday in Fresno.

Jason Parra, Millikan Cross Country

Running in the fastest race in Southern Section history, Millikan sophomore Jason Parra held his own against a historically elite Newbury Park team. Parra ran near the front of the pack for most of the Division 1 race and finished eighth place with a time of 15:05. He was the top individual qualifier for State.

Daylen Austin, Long Beach Poly Football

A playmaker on defense and special teams, Austin was a difference maker in Poly’s 35-0 shutout of Cypress in the semifinals. Austin had a punt return for a touchdown called back due to a penalty, but later in the game would return the opening kickoff of the second half for a score. He also helped the Jackrabbits post their first postseason shutout since a 2-0 win over Orange Lutheran back in 2007.

Jeremie McGurn, Jordan Football

McGurn is one of the senior leaders for the Panthers this season, and he came up huge in J-Town’s semifinal win. Not only did he record a couple sacks on defense, he also made a one-handed catch on a key two-point conversion and caught the game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes left.

COLLEGE

Jasmine Hardy, Long Beach State Women’s Basketball

Hardy lit it up in Long Beach State’s 86-63 win over Seattle, pouring in a career-high 29 points. The junior guard was lights out from beyond the arc, going 7/9 on three-pointers. Her seven made threes tie her for the second most in a single game in program history.

Derrach West, Long Beach City College Football

LBCC’s sophomore quarterback helped the Vikings end their season with a win, tossing a pair of TD passes while leading the team in both passing yards and rushing yards on the night. West was 13/18 passing for 94 yards while running it 13 times for 54 yards in LBCC’s 31-17 win over Allan Hancock.
