A 36-year-old man was killed in an apparent drive-by shooting Friday afternoon in southeastern San Diego’s Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood, authorities said.

Multiple 911 callers reported the gunfire around 1:30 p.m. on Sabre Street between Jacumba Street and Sawtelle Avenue, according to San Diego police and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Officers found the victim with at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, according to San Diego police homicide Lt. Jud Campbell.

The officers notified firefighters that “there was a patient lying in the street and that the patient was deceased,” Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson Mónica Muñoz said in a statement. Firefighters and paramedics were cleared to enter the scene around 1:40 p.m. and confirmed the death.

There were no other patients, Muñoz said.

Investigators did not release the victim’s name but do know his identity, Campbell said in a news release. He said preliminary information indicated that the gunman, or gunmen, were in a white SUV.

Campbell said the occupants of that SUV may have been three “heavyset males,” but a more detailed description was not given.

Homicide detectives are searching for clues and any potential witnesses, and asked anyone with information about the slaying to call the San Diego homicide unit (619) 531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
