Suspect Accused of Fatally Shooting 2 in East Village High-Rise Apartment

Two people were shot and killed in an apartment unit on the 35th floor of the Spire San Diego building on Island Avenue, and a suspect was taken into custody on a nearby freeway less than an hour later

A man was booked into jail on two counts of murder hours after a deadly shooting on the 35th floor of a downtown San Diego high-rise left a man and a woman dead, records show.

Ali Nassar Abulaban, 29, has been booked into San Diego Central Jail on two counts of murder, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. Records obtained by NBC 7 show Abulaban lived on the 35th floor Spire San Diego luxury apartment complex on Island Avenue in the East Village, where two people were killed Thursday afternoon.

Though police have not confirmed an arrest, police said Thursday a male resident of the apartment was detained for questioning after he was found near the Interstate 805/I-15 junction with his five-year-old daughter.

Police also confirmed the woman who was shot and killed also lived at the residence where the shooting occurred. The relationship between the residents and the second shooting victim was not yet known.

Police did not release any new information on Friday.

San Diego police said Thursday a suspect called 911 to report the shooting before taking off from the apartment complex. Officers found him near Interstate 805/I-15 junction with his five-year-old daughter.

The suspect was taken into custody and his daughter was taken into protective services, police said.

Police say they know the identity of the 28-year-old woman but have not released her name. The identity of the man was not known, according to SDPD Lt. Andra Brown.

The motive behind the shooting is not yet known.
