Gun violence leaves 3 dead, 4 wounded, including 4th teen shot in Philly this week

City data: Nearly 2,000 people have been shot in Philadelphia this year

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Seven people were shot in a three-hour stretch on Thursday night. Three of the victims died. One of the wounded is a 14-year-old boy, who managed to survive after being shot four times. He is the fourth teen shot in the city this week alone.

The teenager is one of two victims of a shooting that took place in the area of Cambridge and Percy streets in North Philadelphia a little before 6 p.m. Philadelphia police said he was found inside a home with wounds to the chest and arms. He is in stable condition at Temple University Hospital.

A second victim, 29-year-old Faree Givens, shot several times in the chest and head, died at the hospital. There have been no arrest for Givens' death, and no weapon has been recovered. The motive and suspect are unknown.

About 20 minutes later and just a few blocks away, 23-year-old Jabriel Purnell was shot at 11th and Poplar streets. He later died at the hospital. There have been no arrest for Purnell's death, and no weapon has been recovered. The motive and suspect are unknown.

The third person killed, police say, is a 25-year-old man who was shot at 65th Avenue and Cutler Street in West Oak Lane.

Police said another double shooting left two men wounded at 20th and York streets. And a 20-year-old woman was wounded on Old York Road near Luzerne Street in Hunting Park.

Nearly 2,000 people have been shot in Philadelphia this year, according to data from the city. At least 175 of the wounded are 18 years old or younger. Earlier in the week, three teens were wounded in separate shootings. One of them, a 17-year-old who was shot in North Philadelphia on Tuesday, died.

As of Friday morning, there have been 445 homicides in the city, which is a 14% increase compared to the same time in 2020.

CORRECTION: New information from the Philadelphia Police Department indicates that Faree Givens was 29 years old, not 28, as previous reported.
