The ongoing construction project on Transmountain is set to be completed by the end of December, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Until that time, drivers can expect to see overnight closures of the mountain.

TxDOT announced that the barriers limiting lane access from west El Paso to northeast have been removed and now all lanes are open.

“From the west side going to the Northeast, no problem. Coming home you might have to go around the mountain. The park is still available by the east-bound lanes. If you’re coming from northeast and you want to go for a hike, you will have to go around the mountain you’ll want to access it from the west side and access it from the westside from those eastbound lanes,” Jennifer Wright with TxDOT said.

There are still lane restrictions going west from northeast El Paso.

“Once we get both lanes open on the westbound lanes, you won’t be able to direct that there is work going on because they will be working in the center median. They may still take some of the shoulder or may need some of the extra “elbow room” so to speak in that center median as they are working on the drainage project. However, it shouldn’t really affect travelers,” Wright said.

On Saturday, TxDOT says Transmountain going from northeast El Paso to the westside will be completely closed for two days starting at 5 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Monday for road work. Drivers going from the northeast to the westside will need to take US54 to Interstate 10 as an alternate route.
