DE PERE - Prosecutors and police continued this week to release small amounts of information related to the Oct. 5 attack on a woman with a baby on the East River Trail.

New this week: Brown County District Attorney David Lasee said a 17-year-old suspect is in custody in connection with the attack during a brief court appearance Tuesday, but he said he's not yet ready to file charges. Brown County Court Commissioner Chad Resar then extended Lasee's deadline to charge the teenager until late next week.

Prosecutors in Brown County typically file charges, via a criminal complaint, within a day or two of the time police arrest a person. The law allows court commissioners to grant prosecutors additional time to build a case if the prosecutor is able to convince the commissioner of a compelling reason why extra time is needed, though prosecutors in Brown County rarely use this option.

Here's what we know and what we don't.

Where does the case stand?

In Brown County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon, Lasee identified a 17-year-old Green Bay resident, now in the county jail, as a suspect, but asked for an extension of the time he has to file a criminal complaint, saying authorities need more time to investigate. Resar granted the request and adjourned the case until 2 p.m. Oct. 28.

In a previous court hearing, a court commissioner set bail for the teenager at $1 million.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette does not identify crime suspects who have yet to be charged.

What began the case?

The woman went for a morning walk on the East River Trail with her baby on Oct. 5. After she didn't return when expected, her husband went looking for her and found the infant along the trail, De Pere police said. The husband called police about 11:30 a.m.; police found his wife about 40 to 50 yards from the trail about 15 minutes after the call.

Where did the attack occur?

Police gathered at Tenmile and Black Earth drives, where there's a trail that leads from a residential area to the East River Trail. That entrance to the trail is in northern De Pere, just south of the border of Allouez, west of the river. From that point, the trail continues north to Wiese Park in Allouez; the trail also runs south to Ledgeview Park and beyond.

Where were the victims found?

The infant was found in a grassy area along the trail; the mother was found 40 to 50 yards away.

How are the woman and baby?

The woman was taken to a Green Bay hospital and was released the following day. The infant suffered no visible injuries, police said.

Are there other suspects? Witnesses?

Neither police nor prosecutors have been willing to answer that question as they continue to investigate.

Police had been seeking witnesses to the attack, but have not said if they located any.
