Ballard businesses hurting after series of break-ins

Surveillance video captured a man breaking the front door of Ala Mode Pie in Ballard on Saturday night, just past midnight.

The man is shown looking around and eventually grabbing the tip jar and leaving.

Two hours later, a second man enters the shop. He took the cash register and a pie.

On the same weekend, on the same block, the front door of Spice Waala was broken into.

The owner, Uttam Mukherjee, said all of the electronics and cash was stolen from his restaurant.

The break-ins come after a year-and-a-half of tough times for the restaurant industry during the pandemic.

The Ballard Alliance told KIRO 7 that at least 8 businesses have been hit by thieves in recent days.
