It appears tuition-free community college will not be included in the White House spending plan. Now, U.S Sen. Rand Paul is planning to announce his own bill that might make higher education cheaper.The U.S. senator from Kentucky wants to make college tax-free. He argues that by cutting down on taxes, instead of making tuition free, it will give people an incentive to work in order to get the tax deduction.Paul's bill would give Americans a tax deduction for student loans they take out to pay for higher education.It comes as discussions continue on Capitol Hill about making college affordable. Some members of the progressive wing of Congress have called for free higher education."Over the last decade or so, college education has doubled. People will have more and more loans. Sometimes, it's taking people 10-20 years to pay off their loans," Paul said. "I see college as a work expense, and you get to deduct your work expenses. I think you should be able to like a work expense."The senator expects to introduce the Tax-Free Education Act in the next couple of days. Paul told WKYT-TV in Lexington that his bill would create an environment where colleges don't have to cut costs and ensure that college students move into the workforce once they graduate.
