An 84-year-old Long Beach man died after he was struck by a car on Ocean Boulevard on Thursday morning, Oct. 21, police said.

The man, Fikre Workneh, was walking in traffic lanes outside a crosswalk at Ocean Boulevard and Lindero Avenue when he was struck by an Acura sedan at around 6:25 a.m., Long Beach police said in a statement. The Acura was heading east through the intersection on a green light when the 48-year-old driver struck Workneh, according to police.

A Long Beach police special services officer witnessed the crash and began to try to save Workneh as the Fire Department arrived, but he died at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Acura stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said. Speed, impaired driving or distracted driving were not believed to be factors in the crash, according to police.
