Richwoods High School girls tennis team had a lot to celebrate last week as it continued to build as an area power.

Richwoods led the way for the Peoria area during the first day of the Illinois High School Association Class 1A girls tennis state finals in Buffalo Grove.

Knights singles players Julia Wojtowicz and the doubles team of Olivia Reynolds and Theresa Bartelme each won two matches Thursday before losing in the third round. They will play again Friday in the consolation draw in Palatine.

"Match victories are earned at state. Nothing is easy. I think our team did a great job, they all lived up to their seeds," Richwoods coach Terry Cole said. "I hope they can all push harder. Because (Friday's) matches will define what happens next year with our team, in terms of figuring out (lineup) roles.

"I'm proud of this team. A top-10 finish for us is still a possibility."

Richwoods complied eight-team points and sits tied for seventh after the first day. Chicago U-High leads with 24 points.

Dunlap's doubles team of Shikha Agarwal and Mary Meghrian also won a pair of matches in the main draw before losing in the third round. They also play Friday in the consolation draw in Palatine.

The Dunlap and Richwoods doubles teams landed at opposite ends of the consolation bracket, so they could possibly meet in an all-Peoria-area consolation finals.
