The Superior Plan Commission altered a small business grant development agreement Wednesday, Oct. 20, with Damaso and Mary Ellen Morales to help open Bucktales Cantina and Grill downtown.

The couple originally planned to open Bucktales Cafe in the former Fuller’s Family Restaurant in South Superior.

According to Fuller's Family Restaurant owner, Linette Rasmussen, the sale didn't go through because Morales decided to buy Shorty's instead.

Now the restaurant, expected to open by the end of the year, will be opening in the former Shorty’s Smoked Meats and Pizza building, 1015 Tower Ave.

City officials said they did not know if the Morales' plan to keep the current location near Pattison State Park open, and the couple was not at the plan commission meeting.

“I’m just glad to see something go in that building, so we don’t have another empty building sitting there for years,” Commissioner Dennis Dalbec said.

The $25,000 grant, originally awarded by the council in March, will be used toward the estimated $78,395 investment in repairs, sign updates, kitchen and administrative equipment, and decor for the eatery.

“Personally, I’m a big fan of Bucktales, so now I can walk there,” Mayor Jim Paine said. “I will still be riding my motorcycle there in the summer though.”

The Superior City Council will consider the amended agreement Nov. 2.
