OAKLAND (KRON) – A former police captain was critically injured in a shooting at an Oakland gas station on Thursday.

Sources tell KRON4 that retired Oakland Police Captain Ersie Joyner was putting gas into his car when he was approached by multiple people who tried robbing him.

According to Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, at some point during the robbery, shots were fired injuring two people, including Joyner.

At this time, it is unclear who shot first, but Joyner was shot multiple times. The other person who was shot died at the scene.

Joyner was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He is now in the ICU in stable, but serious condition, according to police.

The shooting occurred at around 1:00 p.m. at the 1700 block of Castro Street.

Chief Armstrong says the motive is unknown at this time.

An investigation continues as police look for other suspects and a black sedan getaway car involved.
