An Abilene firefighter assists another with his air bottle after putting out an RV fire in an alleyway between North Seventh and State streets, in the 4600 block Thursday. The brief but intense blaze was believed to have melted overhead lines for internet and cable customers.

The Abilene Fire Department was dispatched to a north-side recreational vehicle fire Thursday afternoon that involved several downed overhead lines.

According to scanner traffic, an unidentified alarm alerted the AFD at about 4:15 p.m. to a possible fire in the 4600 block of State Street. Fire crews in transit reported seeing black smoke in the area. They located an RV engulfed in flames in the alley.

Several overhead lines also were down in the alley, including one across a gas meter, according to scanner traffic.

The fire impinged on overhead power lines and melted the phone and Internet lines overhead, an AFD spokeswoman said Friday.

A storage shed next to the RV caught fire and was extinguished with minimal damage.

Witnesses told the Reporter-News that the fire started about five to 10 minutes after the RV had pulled down the alley.

Work crews for cable, gas and electric companies were contacted to check the overhead lines in the area, according to scanner traffic.
