PHOTOS: A look back at some of Ohio's past license plates

On Thursday, the state unveiled its new standard license, known as "Sunshine in Ohio."

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio's next standard license plate was revealed on Thursday during a news conference featuring Gov. Mike DeWine. 

The plate, known as "Sunshine in Ohio," will be available to Ohio drivers beginning on December 29. Production of the current "Ohio Pride" plate will cease at the close of business on December 28.

"Our goal was to reflect the beauty of Ohio," Gov. Mike DeWine said Thursday morning moments before unveiling the new license plate.

Other highlights of the plate include:

  • References to the state seal.
  • Diverse cities and rural areas.
  • Birthplace of aviation

“Our goal was for the plate to reflect the heart and soul of the Buckeye State, to honor our past while also looking to the future," Gov. DeWine added.

Here's a look at the license plates we've seen in Ohio over the last 20 years, starting with the newest. 

One important note about the new plate: The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles released a statement on Thursday afternoon explaining that the orientation of the "Wright flyer" plane is facing the wrong way in the image that was unveiled. "We regret this mistake and have fixed the image," the BMV wrote.
