Kenosha County sheriff's deputies shot a man who was a Chicago homicide suspect Thursday morning at a Shell gas station at Highway 50 and U.S. 45 in Bristol.
He was driving the homicide victim's car.
Three deputies did a high-risk traffic stop.
The man took off running and refused to drop his weapon, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said.
That is when K9 Riggs was released and took down the man while he still had a gun in his hand.
Deputies fired more than one shot, the suspect was hit and was wounded in the abdomen and leg, Beth said.
Deputies handcuffed the man and then started first aid. He was in custody.
The suspect was identified Friday as Allen M. Brown, a 33-year-old resident of Countryside, Illinois.
He remained hospitalized and was expected to survive.
No deputies were injured, but Riggs was shot and is being treated in Northern Illinois.
The German shepherd was shot in the forehead and was in stable condition Friday.
"Riggs is a hero and possibly saved someone else from being injured," Beth said.
The sheriff said any deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave.
The Racine County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation.
