’Tis Dining Month, the tastiest time of year! This means we’re dishing up fun and fascinating food content throughout October. Dig in, Milwaukee!

OnMilwaukee's Molly Snyder is on a mission during Dining Month to find the best gyros in Milwaukee. Dare we say she’s “On The Lamb” this October?

After almost a month of gyro eating and reviewing, I'm starting to think it's impossible to find a bad gyro in Milwaukee. This week, we went to Apollo Cafe for the first time in years and it turns out the Brady Street Greek and Mediterranean eatery is as delicious as we'd remembered.

Apollo's gyro is made with well-seasoned beef and lamb gyro meat  shaved into medium slices. The pita was one of our favorites so far: slightly more buttery, puffy but thinner than the others, and perfectly grilled. It came topped with raw onion and tomatoes with a pepperoncini, two chunks of feta and fries on the side.  We appreciated the two containers of tzatziki sauce for one gyro, however Apollo's version was slightly less flavorful than others we've tried. We referred to it as "plain yogurt forward."

Apollo Cafe makes an extremely satisfying gyro, and the price is fair at $7.69. But what really sets the cafe a part from other Greek restaurants we've visited so far is the decor. It feels slightly more upscale with modern, unique takes on ancient Greek art instead of the usual murals.

Apollo Cafe has been a locally-owned staple restaurant on Brady Street for more than 20 years and the quality of their gyro and the clean, artistic decor is testament as to why. We'll be back for gyros, as well as to try the Friday fish fry which definitely piqued our interest.
