The former air traffic control towers at the former South Weymouth Naval Air base have been vandalized and burned a number of times since the base closed. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021.

WEYMOUTH — A fire has burned a building next to a control tower at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station.

The former air base stretches across town lines and the building that burned was in Abington. The fire started Wednesday night just before 8 p.m.

Abington Deputy Fire Chief Jack Glynn said the fire destroyed an approximately 25-by-50-foot building next to the tower. He said because the building was so remote, there were no fire hydrants and firefighters had issues getting water to the building deep in the woods.

He said the fire did not spread to the tower.

Glynn said the cause of the fire is unknown and would be hard to determine. He said crews cleared the scene at about 10:30 p.m.

Abington, Rockland and Weymouth firefighters responded to the fire.

This is not the first time fire has hit the old air base.

Last year investigators determined that someone intentionally started a fire that burned a number of buildings at the base.

Parts of the base have been redeveloped as Union Point, an apartment complex, and sports fields.
