WEDNESDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

FIELD HOCKEY

One of the major strengths Masconomet head coach Maggie Sturgis has spoken about a few times this season is the No. 2 Chieftains’ ability to flip on the switch and deliver a scoring punch in an instant.

Wednesday afternoon, after 55 minutes of an excruciatingly stingy No. 10 Danvers defense holding off 16 corner plays, Masconomet showed that off in perhaps its most impressive form yet on senior day.

With a one-goal deficit and under five minutes to go, the undefeated Chieftains (14-0-1) scored twice in a span of less than 30 seconds to pull off a 2-1 win over the Falcons (11-3-1) and seal the Northeastern Conference title. Maggie Sturgis and senior Lily Conway tallied the scores to negate the Chieftains’ first deficit since the season-opener, overcoming a team they could very well match up with again deep in the Div. 2 state tournament.

“I’m just so proud of every single person’s determination and perseverance … we kept pushing,” Conway said. “We knew how important this game was. … Our goal is obviously to win a state championship and to do that, we have to get used to playing these teams.”

Danvers scored in the second quarter when Katherine Purcell buried a goal from a scrum in front of the net, putting the Falcons in a great position to win as Grace Brinkley played well in the midfield, the entire defense locked down Masconomet’s threats, and goalie Megan McGinnity (nine saves) took care of the rest. But 16 corner penalties had the Chieftains pounding on the door, and when Julia Graves’ goal on one was called back due to a dangerous hit to end the third quarter, they turned on the jets.

Sturgis buried her 32nd goal of the year amid the teams’ 17th corner play with 4:43 to go, and with the score tied at 1-1, Graves sent a hard drive 25 seconds later for Conway to redirect into the cage for the lead.

“That’s the power of this team,” Bridgeo said. “You unleash the beast, they get mad, and they start to play. … They just gutted it out. That was crazy. We just did not have the scoring touch today. Anytime you have a senior night, it’s such an emotional time. It’s hard to come out to say goodbye in one instance, but then to come out and play a game, it’s really hard.”

In the Merrimack Valley Conference, Emma Reilly registered a hat trick, helping to power Andover (14-0-1) to a 5-0 shutout of Tewksbury. … Sydney Moda and Emma Siggens each tallied a pair of scores to lead Central Catholic (8-7) to a 6-0 win over Dracut.

Elyse Scales scored twice as Walpole defeated Milton 4-0 in the Bay State Conference. … Sophomore Olivia Norchi flourished with three goals and an assist to lift Natick past Weymouth 6-0. … Bridget Lee sniped a pair of goals, while Maggie Burchill notched two assists to help rally Braintree from an early two-goal deficit to a 3-2 victory over Needham.

Gianna Gaeta scored twice as Georgetown (5-8-2) defeated Methuen 2-1 in a nonleague contest. … Emily Curran scored while Kailey Hutchinson made five saves as Durfee (10-3-3) edged Old Rochester, 1-0. … Owen de Mars posted a pair of goals and Madelyn Haley added another to power Westford Academy over Lowell, 3-1.

In a South Coast Conference match, Lexi Yost and Megan Smith each scored twice for Case (10-3-1) in a 5-2 win over Seekonk. … Karissa Albin erupted for five goals, while Reese Swanson had a pair of goals for Somerset Berkley (7-4-3) in a 7-0 shutout of Apponequet.

Madison Sexton’s goal with 12 minutes to play served as the difference for Bourne (3-9-2), edging Fairhaven in the South Shore League, 1-0.

In a Cape and Islands League Atlantic affair with the league title in the balance, Paige Hawkins pushed in a goal off a rebound to help Sandwich (11-1-1) edge Monomoy 1-0. … Reagan Hicks scored twice and distributed two assists, combining with Giana Mullins’ two goals to help Barnstable (6-5-2) top Dennis-Yarmouth 6-0.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

David Vandi, Matt Morneau, Jack Courtney, Jarlen Arango, Seyha Rath and Alex Wahpo took the top six spots as Lowell capped off its 12th consecutive undefeated regular season Merrimack Valley Conference Championship with a home tri-meet sweep over Tewksbury (15-48) and Chelmsford (15-50) at Shedd Park. The Red Raiders who last lost a dual meet in the 2009 season have now won 117 regular season contests over 12 seasons.

Sam Buckley won the race in a time of 16:26 as Somerville (7-0) capped off its Greater Boston League schedule with a 15-50 win over Revere.

GIRLS SOCCER

Gabby Bilong scored with just under 10 minutes left to give Arlington Catholic (6-9) a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s in the Catholic Central League.

Isabella Vena broke into the varsity books in a big way, registering a hat trick for her first career goals for Central Catholic (6-6-2) in a 6-0 Merrimack Valley Conference win over Lowell.

Lucinda Li Cotter dished out a pair of assists, capping a shutout from Emily Meyers to help Oliver Ames (12-1-1) beat Stoughton 3-0 in Hockomock League play.

Claire Nistl poked in the game-winner for Hamilton-Wenham (11-1-1) en route a 2-1 win over Manchester Essex that sealed the Cape Ann League title.

Bella Prisco hit the back of the net twice as Blue Hills (12-1-1) defeated Mayflower League foe Holbrook 3-2.

Cait Mullins notched a pair of goals and two assists to lead Marblehead (11-3-1) to a 6-1 win over Salem in Northeastern Conference play.

VOLLEYBALL

Sofia Estrella picked up 10 kills and Mia Comeau had 22 assists to lead Apponequet (7-9) to a 3-2 South Coast Conference win over Dighton-Rehoboth.

Olivia Hingston, Shannon Esperon and Alyssa Slamin each had at least 10 kills as Holbrook grinded out a 3-2 win over Westport in the Mayflower League.

Ali Tkach had a big night at the net for Essex Tech (15-1), firing off 17 kills in a 3-1 Commonwealth Athletic Conference victory over Lowell Catholic.
