Shooting at Mud Island apartment leaves residents concerned

Memphis Police said one man was shot at the Riverset Apartment Complex early Wednesday morning.

"I completely lost it, freaked out. Completely freaked out and we have no idea who did it," said the victim's friend Ashleigh Scroggins.

Ashleigh Scroggins was horrified when she found out one of her friends was shot in the parking lot of the Riverset Apartments.

She said she was hanging out with him hours before it happened.

Scroggins went to bed then woke up to police telling her about the shooting.

Officers said the victim drove himself to Le Bonheur for help.

The motive behind the shooting is still unclear.

"There is glass all over the parking lot, there is a bullet in my neighbor's window and several police cars out here," said Scroggins.

Scroggins said her friend is out of the hospital but he is still very shaken.

Her neighbors who heard the gunfire are also scared, especially one family who had a bullet go through their window.

The neighbor talked but didn't want to share his name

"It's quite alarming, I mean Mud Island is supposed to be safer than other parts of the city, "said the neighbor.

FOX13 also looked at the Memphis Police Crime Map and saw several reports of burglaries, car break-ins, robberies and more inside the apartment complex.

We're also looking into if crime has increased, decreased or stayed the same.

As for Ashleigh, she's now thinking about moving.

"I was like I'm going to move to the safest part of Memphis, Harbor Town, and I feel like now it's the biggest mistake," said Scroggins.

FOX13 tried talking to the managers at the apartment complex but when we approached the door they locked it.

We were told there are security guards patrolling the parking lots.
