Several Greece Athena Middle School students involved in a fight on a school bus are facing disciplinary measures.

A school district spokesperson says the fight occurred Tuesday afternoon on the way home.

Greece Police and district security responded. The "extreme behavior" required "immediate intervention," according to the district.

The students involved could be suspended or temporarily lose bus privileges.

Parents were asked to drive their children to school on Wednesday while the incident was looked into.

"Typically, a bus with a high number of students on board would have a driver and a bus attendant to help manage student behavior. Due to staffing shortages, no attendant was present yesterday," according to the district. "The district has taken several proactive steps to try to mitigate these types of situations, such as adding video surveillance on all buses. Going forward we will work to ensure that there is always an attendant present on this bus and other highly populated buses."

Greece, like many districts, has seen a rise in student fights this year.
