WORCESTER — Lucky’s Café, 102 Grove St., Worcester, will close at the end of the year, according to owner Peter Armer.

“Regretfully, the building’s owner has chosen not to renew our lease at the end of December,” said Armer, who with business partner Patti Hallinan operates Lucky’s. Armer said he doesn’t know what the owner will do with the space after he moves out.

Armer is hopeful he can find a new location to reopen Lucky’s. “Preferably, a nearby spot that’s affordable,” he said.

Lucky’s Café has been in business since 1991, with word of mouth leading to a successful business and loyal clientele. Despite its location in downstairs space hidden from street view and with only a small sign outside the business, Lucky’s has attracted a steady breakfast and luncheon crowd and at one time served dinner. Currently, customers can dine in or take-out. Home-style food, including Hallinan’s soups, and daily specials top the menu.

Armer in 2016 closed the café for a month to renovate and upgrade the kitchen. The business was in six months of lockdown during the pandemic.

The small independent owners face the daunting challenge of packing up while also continuing to serve customers through the end of December.
