Socorro Independent School District selected a contractor for its new Student Activity Complex.

However, Tom Eyeington, the district’s chief operations manager, said the project is over budget and believes that 20 percent of that is due to the pandemic.

"We knew that this project was going to be about in the third year, so we put some escalation costs in there, but we never knew that COVID-19 would affect the construction industry as much as it has," Eyeington said.

School board members awarded the contract to Banes General Contractors.

Eyeington said the district will begin negotiations in hopes to lower the cost.

The new Student Activity Complex is part of the 2017 bond that was passed by voters.

It will include a football and soccer field and would seat about 8,000 people.
