WORCESTER, MA — Worcester's annual fall leaf program will begin on Nov. 1 in 2021, with trucks moving neighborhood-by-neighborhood each week scooping up autumn refuse.

The 2021 leaf collection will begin in central Worcester in the Piedmont area and move through neighborhoods whose trash pickup day is Wednesday. Beyond the first week, pickups could happen almost any day of the month and correspond with your local trash pickup day.

Here's the schedule based on trash pickup days:

  • Wednesday — Nov. 1 to 6
  • Monday — Nov. 8 to 27
  • Thursday — Nov. 8 to 13
  • Tuesday — Nov. 15 to 20
  • Friday — Nov. 22 to 27
  • College areas — Nov. 26, 27

When it's time for your local pickup, rake leaves into the gutter in front of your home. You can also put the leaves in biodegradable paper bags. Be sure not to block sewer drains, and don't put regular trash or large pieces of brush into leaf piles.

The best way to check your leaf pickup is on the city's map. Areas that are approaching leaf pickup next will be shaded on the map:

As with every fall leaf pickup period in Worcester, the city will ban parking during pickup days. That means cars have to be moved off local streets at the risk of getting towed and fined.

"Generally, notice is given 1 to 2 days in advance. However, a variety of factors may impact our ability to collect leaves such as inclement weather," the city says about when to move cars.

Residents can also drop off yard waste for free at three collection points across the city:

  • 1065 Millbury Street: Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sundays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (only site for large branches)
  • Chandler Street across from Foley Stadium: Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Clark Street Near E. Mountain Street: Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Saturdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
