Specialty Weymouth doughnuts to be featured on 'Phantom Gourmet'

WEYMOUTH – An unassuming doughnut shop in Weymouth that has enjoyed a burst of success over the last 18 months will be featured on the TV show "Phantom Gourmet" this week. 

Donut King in Weymouth, which first opened its doors in 1987, will have its line of specialty sweet treats featuring candy, marshmallows and creative decorating spotlighted in a "Phantom Gourmet" episode to air at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, on WSBK and 11:30 p.m. on WBZ.

Donut King owner Sin Ty immigrated to the United States in the 1980s and started the business with his wife, Denise. Despite an engineering degree from Boston University, Sin said he went into the restaurant business to start a company that could involve the whole family and, ultimately, be passed down.

The restaurant has done well, but it took off amid the pandemic thanks to the creativity and top-notch social media strategy of Jennifer Ty, Sin's daughter. 

Since the doughnut and coffee shop went all in on creative breakfast pastries, hundreds of new customers have been drawn to the shop to taste the Pumpkin Patch, a frosted chocolate with Oreo, a gummy worm and a rice treat; the Crème Brûlée, stuffed with vanilla cream and torched; the Salted Carmel Trio, topped with pretzel, Twix and Heath; and a dozen other varieties. These days, weekends bring lines out the door.

The shop is open from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, and bakers work overnight to make all of Donut King's offerings. The treats are all made and decorated by hand.

"Phantom Gourmet" has profiled chefs and restaurants from the New England area since 1993. Other area restaurants featured in recent years include Corner Cafe in Marshfield, Amelia's in Stoughton and Precinct 10 in Weymouth.
