More than 3,400 fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts tested positive for the coronavirus last week, a daily average of about 490 people as the rate of breakthrough infections dropped in the Bay State.

Overall case counts in the state have been trending lower following a surge in infections amid the more highly contagious delta variant.

The count of 3,431 breakthrough cases last week was down from 4,034 breakthrough infections in the prior week. The week before that was 3,741 cases, and the previous week was 4,378 cases.

Breakthrough cases in Massachusetts have been making up about 35% of the state’s overall cases in recent months. People who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for infection and a severe case.

Overall, 47,929 fully vaxxed people have tested positive for the virus, according to new data from the state Department of Public Health on Tuesday. That’s 1.02% of the almost 4.7 million fully vaxxed people in Massachusetts.

The 47,929 overall cases is a jump of 3,431 breakthrough infections from last week — or a daily average of 490 fully vaccinated people testing positive.

Last Tuesday’s report showed an increase of 4,034 breakthrough cases, a daily rate of 576 fully vaxxed people testing positive.

The week before that was a rise of 3,741 breakthrough cases, a daily average of 534 fully vaxxed people testing positive.

The prior week was a count of 4,378 breakthrough cases, a daily rate of 625 infections.

Breakthrough hospitalizations account for about 35% of current COVID-19 hospitalizations. Those who are unvaccinated are at a much higher risk for a severe case and hospitalization.

There have been 1,566 hospitalizations among fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts, which represents 0.03% of those who are fully vaxxed.

The 1,566 total patients is a one-week increase of 138 fully vaxxed patients. That’s down from the previous weekly increase of 148 fully vaxxed patients. The week before that was 125 fully vaxxed patients.

The state has reported 371 breakthrough deaths, or 0.008% of those who are fully vaxxed. That’s a one-week increase of 26 deaths. That’s a drop from the previous weekly increase of 45 deaths, and the week before that was 46 deaths.
