Starting this weekend, you’ll have to dial 10 digits to make local calls in certain parts of the country, including parts of Kentucky and Indiana.Beginning Sunday, Oct. 24, it will be necessary to dial the area code, even locally, for these area codes: Kentucky - 859 (northern Kentucky)Indiana - 219, 574 (northwest Indiana)It also affects 513, which covers Cincinnati.Right now, if you just dial the seven-digit phone number (without the area code), that call will connect locally.So, why is this necessary? The Federal Communications Commission has adopted 988 as the new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.In order for 988 to work, mandatory 10-digit local dialing will be implemented, FCC officials said. On and after Oct. 24, local calls dialed with only seven digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number.Your telephone number, including the current area code, will not change. The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the dialing change. For more information, click here.
