Teenage girl killed in northeast Wichita accident

A teenage girl was killed Saturday evening in an accident in northeast Wichita.

Police found the girl in the roadway at 40th Street North and Webb Road around 8 p.m.   She was pronounced dead at the scene and officers found that a box truck was going south on Webb Road when the girl ran from a ditch into the path of the truck.  The driver tried to stop but was unable to avoid hitting the girl.

Police said the 19-year-old girl was living at a nearby adult care facility, and officials with Heartspring issued a statement later saying the girl was a Heartspring School student.    The statement said the girl left an off-campus home environment and ended up at the intersection.

Heartspring officials said the staff in the home were following current protocols for the supervision of residents.   The statement said Heartspring officials were on the scene of the accident, working with Wichita Police.   The statement said the organization and team members are also working with the girl’s family to offer assistance.

Heartspring said staff members are devastated at the loss of a member of its family.  Police are still investigating the accident, and anyone with information is urged to call detectives at 268-4407.
