SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Sunday evening at an undisclosed location within city limits, police said.
The department’s Traffic Company will perform the checkpoint between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests, according to police. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving while impaired.
During the checkpoint, police officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both.
“The safety of our community is and always will be our mission,” San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said in a statement. “We are looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is dangerous and puts others on the road at risk.”
