This award-winning coffee shop is opening a new uptown Phoenix location. Here's what to know

Lawrence Jarvey (left) and Dan Suh are the owners of Provision coffee bar, located at 4501 N. 32nd St. in Phoenix.

Central Phoenix fans of Provision coffee may soon have a shorter drive to get their Southwest Sunrise nitro cold brew or Kyoto Blossom sparkling white tea.

Provision's existing location near Arcadia is often filled with productive workers sipping coffee while plugging away on their laptops. Dogs fill the large patio as friends catch up over breakfast. In the evenings, couples enjoy date night with coffee-infused cocktails in hand.

Now, a new location is in the works closer to the central city line at Seventh Street and Missouri Avenue. The new coffee shop will be wedged between two office buildings that are situated in a largely residential neighborhood.

Co-owner Dan Suh hopes the new location will draw a similar crowd.

"We want to be more than a simple amenity for the building," Suh says, describing the new space as perfect for both business meetings and date nights.

Not only will the new location bring craft coffee and creative cocktails to uptown Phoenix, it will give owners Suh and Lawrence Jarvey the opportunity to offer new foods they've been dreaming of serving to customers.

"In Arcadia we are limited by physical space," Suh says. "Here, we'll have pretty much everything from Arcadia plus more."

What to expect at the new Provision

On the corner of Seventh and Missouri, two office buildings sit close together, but were previously unconnected. A new construction project from the buildings' owners, called the Link, connects the two structures. The aim was to create a gathering space for the buildings' employees and the community.

Provision will occupy part of this modern extension and provide eye-catching details, Suh says. A mural from Arizona artist Lucinda Yrene who goes by La Morena will decorate one wall. Another focal point will be a three story wall covered with plants from floor to ceiling.

The bar itself will look similar to the one in Arcadia, shaped like an "L" with one side offering coffee and the other focusing on cocktails. The drinks menu will remain largely the same, Suh says, adding that the biggest difference will be with the food.

"We want to make it more meal-centric" he says, explaining that's what customers have been asking for in Arcadia. "But those things are really hard to do without a kitchen."

The new location includes a 700 square-foot kitchen that will churn out heartier meals to accompany the cafe's original menu of toasts and pastries. Customers will be able to enjoy breakfasts of eggs and potatoes and pair small bites and tapas with their cocktails in the evening.

When will Provision uptown open?

Jarvey and Suh signed the lease on their new space in April 2021 but pandemic-related delays have pushed out their opening timeline.

Everything is in short supply, Suh says, from milk and cups to the new refrigerators he tried to order. Labor shortages have also caused prices to increase and construction to pause.

The team now estimates that they will need 20% more than their original budget to make the project happen, which is why they started a Mainvest community investment campaign to ask fans to contribute money to help the new location open. As an investor, those who contribute will receive their contribution plus an interest percentage to be paid back by 2031.

"Any little bit helps," Suh says. "And the closer to the goal we can get, the more confident we feel."

So far, Suh says, the campaign is going well. But fundraising efforts combined with unexpected equipment delays make planning a grand opening difficult.

The tightest prediction he can give is that Provision uptown will likely open in the first half of 2022.
