"How many more tears need to be shed, how many more lives need to be lost," Armstrong asked during a news conference. "There will be additional officers out on Oakland’s streets this weekend, with the sole purpose to focus on violent crimes and those causing it."

Oakland has recorded 96 homicides in 2021 alone; that’s one life lost every three days. This same time last year, the city had recorded 64 homicides. It has been nearly a decade since the Oakland dealt with a crime spike of this magnitude.
