A government relations firm the city of Superior recently contracted with in Madison is coming under new ownership.

Michael Best Strategies announced the acquisition of Capitol Consultants on Tuesday, Sept. 14, one week after the council approved a contract for lobby services with Capitol Consultants, specifically with Superior-native Bill McCoshen, who has advocated for the city in the state capital since 2001.

McCoshen said city officials were made aware there could be a change before the council was presented the agreement that was approved Sept. 7. The contract runs through March 31, 2022, the end of the legislative session.

The city’s interest was in working with McCoshen and that isn’t going to change, Mayor Jim Paine said.

McCoshen, managing partner in Capitol Consultants, will join Strategies as a partner as part of the move, along with Tony Landenohl, senior vice president of Capitol Consultants, according to a news release issued by Michael Best Strategies.

“Bill McCoshen has a long track record of delivering client wins on some of the most important public policy issues facing the business community,” said Robert Marchant, president of Michael Best Strategies. “We’re excited to have the Capitol Consultants team join the Michael Best family and look forward to adding their clients to a growing list of businesses that rely on Michael Best Strategies for their government relations, business consulting and strategic communications needs.”

Founded in 1992 by Carol McCoshen, Capitol Consultants has helped clients navigate state government regardless of which party controlled the executive and legislative branches. In addition to government relations, the firm provides grassroots advocacy and training, and strategic communications.

“Capitol Consultants has been part of our family since Carol started the firm in 1992,” McCoshen said. “Joining (Michael Best) Strategies will allow us to grow and provide all the collective clients with a one-stop shop for government affairs, business strategy, economic development, legal and public relations.

"We built an extremely successful and effective firm over the last 29 years, and we’re excited to partner with Michael Best Strategies in carrying that legacy forward. This move solidifies Strategies as the go-to government relations firm in Wisconsin and positions us well for future growth," he said.

By joining the national firm, Paine said McCoshen will have access to greater resources, which will benefit the city.
