CULVER CITY, CA — Construction starts Monday to replace the Higuera Street Bridge with a bike ramp connecting Higuera Street to the Ballona Creek Bike Path, city officials announced Friday.

The bridge will close from Monday through December 2022. Most of the work will be between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, however, intermittent weekend work is also planned.

Due to the bridge closure, traffic will be detoured to National Boulevard, Hayden Avenue, Eastham Drive, and Jefferson Boulevard.

The construction is all part of the Higuera Street Bridge Replacement Project and Ballona Creek Bicycle Path Connectivity Project, which will be led by contractor Ortiz Enterprises, Inc.

The Higuera Street Bridge is west of Jefferson Boulevard in the Hayden Tract area and crosses over Ballona Creek. It will be removed and replaced with a newly constructed bike ramp that connects Higuera Street to the Ballona Creek Bike Path.

The proposed bridge will have four vehicle lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalks, along with traffic signal, paving, and striping improvements. The new bike ramp will include retaining walls, landscape and irrigation.

The Ballona Creek Bike Path will be closed from Monday through Oct. 15 while crews demolish the bridge, city officials said.

After demolition, the Ballona Creek Bike Path will be largely open during construction, but at times will have to be closed intermittently, according to the city. During closures, bicycle detour signs will be placed at strategic locations to direct bicyclists to Jefferson Boulevard.

"You may also experience construction noise and dust even though every effort will be made by the City and the Contractor to minimize these inconveniences," city officials said.

Businesses and their access points will remain open during construction.

"Your patience and cooperation in observing all traffic controls, parking restrictions and traffic control workers will be sincerely appreciated and will help in expediting construction of the project," city officials said.
