SRPD detectives who took over the investigation later identified Berhe as the suspect, according to police.

Berhe and the victim were acquaintances but the motive for the shooting is not yet known, police said.

Detectives believed Berhe was in Novato and began to surveil the 7600 block of Redwood Boulevard Tuesday.

Detectives and officers at around 11 a.m. located Berhe, standing outside of a motel room, police said.

Berhe ran away when officers tried to contact him but he got no farther than 20 yards when he was taken into custody, police said.

During a search of his motel room, police said ammunition, high-capacity magazines and a loaded handgun were found.

Berhe is currently on Post Release Community Supervision and is required to submit to searches of his person, residence and vehicle. He is also on a $1 million bail.

In addition to the attempted homicide charge, Berhe was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a gang member in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, and possession of high-capacity magazines, police said.
