PHOENIX — Police officers shot a man while responding to a call about suspicious activity at a hotel near Chandler Fashion Center on Friday morning, authorities said.

The man had been hiding in the parking lot of a hotel near Chandler Boulevard and Chandler Village Drive officers located him, according to the Chandler Police Department.

“He displayed a weapon, and our officers took that as a threat and ended up discharging their firearms,” Sgt. Jason McClimans of the Chandler Police Department said during a press conference Friday morning.

On Friday afternoon, McClimans said in a press release that the man “raised, pointed, and fired his weapon at the officers on scene, which resulted in officers firing their duty weapons.” The man’s weapon was recovered at the scene, according to the release.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment. No other information about his condition was made available.

(UPDATE: On Sept. 23, Chandler police identified the suspect as 43-year-old Brandon Shaun Aldecoa. He remained hospitalized and had his custody turned over to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.)

Nobody else was injured during the incident, which remains under investigation.

Police were called before 7 a.m. about a woman asking a hotel guest if she could hide in a hotel room because of a domestic violence situation, according to the release.

Officers arrived and started looking for both parties. They learned the man was associated with a vehicle in the parking lot. When the approached the location, the man was hiding in the closed rear bed of the vehicle, according to the release. The man fired at the officers from that location, according to the release.

Both officers were equipped with body-worn cameras that were activated, McClimans said.

It was the third shooting of the year involving Chandler police and 40th overall by Valley law enforcement, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
