A new report from AARP shows Florida leads the nation in COVID-19 nursing home deaths among residents and staff. The report shows there were 237 nursing home resident COVID-19 deaths in a four-week span between late July and Aug. 22.Thirteen deaths over the same time period were from staff. "You really got to zero in on those vaccine rates for nursing homes and in really assisted living facilities as well,” Brian Lee said. Lee is the executive director of Families for Better Care, an advocacy group that supports nursing homes and assisted living facilities. "The problem with that data is it's about two weeks old, so if you're relying on stale data then Florida will be behind the virus,” Lee said.Governor Ron DeSantis has been criticized for scaling back on daily COVID-19 reporting. " kind of taken his hands off of the wheel,” Lee said. DeSantis' press secretary Christina Pushaw wouldn't comment on the end of the daily COVID reports in a statement she sent to WESH 2 News. However, she criticized President Joe Biden's Administration for its purchase of Regeneron which has left fewer doses for Florida. "This treatment is proven to be lifesaving for COVID patients in high-risk groups, including residents of assisted living and long term care facilities," Pushaw wrote. The Gardens at Depugh in Winter Park is dealing with the opposite. Since March 2020, they facility has had no COVID-19 deaths and eight confirmed COVID-19 cases: three from residents and five from staff. "We've been very, very lucky and very blessed, but we did a lot of hard work with social distancing, following the CDC and CMS guidelines, handwashing, wearing PPE,” Elizabeth Barton said.Barton, the administrator of the nursing home, says all 40 residents except for one are vaccinated. Although some of their staff members are not, each of them has to go through a health screening before clocking in. "It's typically because you care and when you care about people you really have to go above and beyond,” Barton said.
