A record number of North Texas fire departments, law enforcement agencies and volunteer organizations will participate in the 13th Annual Medal of Honor Recipient Motorcade, which is expected to stretch two miles in length and feature more than 50 vehicles in participation.
Included among those departments will be the Grapevine police and fire departments, Roanoke police and fire departments, the Southlake Department of Public Safety and fire department, the Fort Worth Fire Department, and the Keller Police Department.
It will also include the Highland Village Fire Department, Lewisville Police Department, Flower Mound Police Department, the Denton County Sheriff's Office, and Denton County Office of Emergency Services, as well as constables from Tarrant and Denton counties, and the DFW Airport Department of Pubic Safety.
The motorcade is expected to leave the staging area at the south end of the DFW Airport between 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Parts of Hwy. 183, Hwy. 360, Hwy. 114, SH 121 and access points along I-35W and I-35E will be shut down as the motorcade travels through. Public safety agencies are requesting citizens traveling along the motorcade route to be aware of possible delays and move into the right lane if approached from behind.
Of 67 living Medal of Honor recipients, 16 are expected to be present in Gainesville for the weekend. Residents are encouraged to stand along roadways and wave U.S. flags as the motorcade approaches.
“There’s very few people who have won this Medal of Honor,” Denton County Constable Robert Kubicek said. “This event is a very important event to meet and honor those people, since most people will never get to meet even one honoree in their lives.”
