An East Bay startup automaker has beat Tesla as the producer of the electric vehicle that can travel the farthest on a single charge.

Lucid Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer based in Alameda County, created the Air Dream Edition Range, an E.V. which can drive 520 miles on a full battery, the Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday.

Lucid’s top-of-the-line vehicle beats Tesla, the leading maker of electric cars, by more than 100 miles in range, causing an upset within the E.V. industry.

"Crucially, this landmark has been achieved by Lucid’s world-leading in-house E.V. technology, not by simply installing an oversize battery pack," Chief Executive Peter Rawlinson said in a statement.

An E.V.'s range is highly important as a significant downside to buying an electric vehicle is the amount of time it takes for the battery to recharge. To decrease the need to plug in the vehicle increases its accessibility to the average American.

President Joe Biden and other world leaders are encouraging people to switch to electric vehicles to fight climate change, but a major transition is unlikely to occur until the auto industry can decrease charge time or ensure that charging stations are available across the nation.
