Woman charged with DWI after vehicle crash injured a pedestrian in downtown Wilmington

A woman has been charged with driving under the influence after hitting and critically injuring a pedestrian near downtown Wilmington early Tuesday.

The Wilmington Police Department's traffic unit responded Tuesday at 2:55 a.m. to a car striking a pedestrian near the intersection of 3rd and Harnett streets, according to a news release from the department.

According to the release, the 33-year-old victim was struck while picking up debris in the roadway. She had been involved in a single-vehicle crash before she was hit.

The victim was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for her injuries. She is currently in critical condition, the release states.

Haylea Wyckoff, 27, has been charged with DWI and DWI causing serious injury. She was given a $2,500 unsecured bond, according to the news release.

The WPD's traffic unit is still investigating the crash.
